St. Isaac’s Cathedral is the biggest cathedral in St. Petersburg! St. Isaac’s Cathedral was ordered by Tsar Alexander I to replace an earlier structure. St. Isaac’s Cathedral took 40 years to construct, under French architect Montferrand’s direction, from 1818 to 1858. St. Isaac’s Cathedral was dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, a patron saint of Peter the Great. The exterior of St. Isaac’s Cathedral is faced with gray and pink stone, and has 112 total red granite columns. The rotunda of St. Isaac’s Cathedral is encircled by a walkway accessible to tourists. It has 48 statues total: 24 are on the roof, and another 24 are at the top of the rotunda.
