First stop in Russia for Around the World with Gummibär is St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, Russia! Most colorful church I’ve ever seen!

St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, Russia was originally commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century to commemorate a military victory. St. Basil the Blessed impressed Ivan in 1547 when he foretold a fire that swept through Moscow that year. Upon his death, Basil was buried in the Trinity Cathedral that stood on this site at the time. The Cathedral is made of nine chapels that stand on a single foundation.  The wide array of colors on St. Basil’s Cathedral are said to represent the scales of a golden fish, the skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of a lizard, and the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon’s neck.  Read more about St. Basil’s Cathedral here!
